Medicolegal Nationwide Appointments
Dr. Percy Miller recognises that many patients involved in medical-legal matters are not in a position to travel easily to Johannesburg. Injuries may significantly limit mobility, patients may require the assistance of companions, and the cost and logistics of long-distance travel can often be prohibitive. For this reason, Dr. Miller offers the convenience of nationwide consultations, travelling to the relevant destination when necessary so that patients may be assessed closer to home.
The medical-legal fee itself remains unchanged, and is charged at the standard rate. The only additional expense is the cost of return air travel, which is to be arranged and covered by the instructing attorney.
This service is available only to destinations accessible by commercial air travel, as road travel is not practically viable due to the significant time and logistical demands involved.
Key Travel Conditions
Air Travel Only
Consultations outside Johannesburg are available only where commercial air travel is possible. Road travel to distant locations is not feasible.Departure Airport
All flights must depart from O.R. Tambo International Airport. Travel from Lanseria Airport is unfortunately not logistically possible.Airfare Arrangements
The instructing attorney is responsible for purchasing the return airline ticket in advance.
An e-ticket must be issued and forwarded to the practice prior to travel.Local Matters (Johannesburg / Pretoria Region)
Matters within the greater Johannesburg or Pretoria areas are generally expected to be conducted at Dr. Miller’s consulting rooms.
In exceptional circumstances—such as where a patient is confined to a rehabilitation facility, nursing home, or similar institution—special arrangements may be discussed directly with the practice. Any additional costs will be advised accordingly.
Scheduling of Consultations
To assist attorneys in managing travel costs, multiple consultations may be scheduled on the same day, subject to the following guidelines:
- Maximum of three medical-legal consultations per day
- If more than three matters are scheduled, overnight accommodation must be arranged and paid for by the instructing attorney
- The earliest morning flight is generally the most practical travel arrangement
- Where only one consultation is scheduled, a midday return flight is usually appropriate
When planning appointments, sufficient time must be allowed for:
- Flight arrival and disembarkation
- Travel from the airport to the consultation venue
- The two-hour medical-legal consultation
- Return transport to the airport
- Check-in at least one hour prior to departure
Transport at Destination
All airport collections and local transport arrangements must be organised by the instructing attorney.
Car rental is not a practical option, as Dr. Miller may not be familiar with the destination and does not travel independently within unfamiliar areas.
Documentation Requirements
To ensure that each consultation is thorough and productive, all relevant medico-legal documentation must be provided well in advance of the scheduled appointment.
Preferred submission methods:
- Electronic documents sent directly to the practice
- Large files transmitted via secure transfer services such as WeTransfer
This allows the practice to download and prepare the material in advance, ensuring that Dr. Miller is fully familiar with the case before travelling. There is unfortunately insufficient time to review extensive documentation upon arrival, and important details within the records may be critical to the assessment.
At the consultation venue:
- A printed hard copy of the documentation must be available for reference during the evaluation.
Where documentation is too extensive to transmit electronically, arrangements should be made for the files to be couriered to the Johannesburg practice prior to the consultation date.
These arrangements allow Dr. Miller to provide efficient, well-prepared medical-legal assessments nationwide, while ensuring that both patients and instructing attorneys benefit from a practical and carefully managed consultation process.
